Also, Kyle Schwarber was expected back from injury as a fulltime outfielder. It couldn’t have been known right after the 2016 World Series that Schwarber would be so bad early in 2017 that he’d have to be sent to Triple-A Iowa for a while.

It was surprising to see Hudson come unglued. He’s been so steady out of the Dodgers bullpen. He just didn’t seem to have it in Game 4. After throwing six sliders to strike out Juan Soto leading off the third inning, Hudson, on consecutive first-pitch fastballs, drilled Aaron Judge and gave up a scorched single to Jazz Chisholm Jr. He got ahead of Giancarlo Stanton, then walked him. After Anthony Rizzo popped out, in stepped Anthony Volpe. Two outs. Bases juiced. Hudson’s first offering was a low-and-in slider that caught too much of the zone. Volpe smoked it, and the Dodgers suddenly were chasing from behind in a bullpen game.
While Yankees fans enjoyed the effort, they also held their breaths remembering last year when Judge ran through the right field fence at Dodger Stadium. That herculean effort injured his right foot and derailed the team’s season.
Yankees greats Derek Jeter and Paul O’Neill threw out the first pitches for World Series Games 3 and 4 at Yankee Stadium this week. Tonight, the Yankees will turn to another pinstripe great to lift the team before the game.
The idea was, even without Cole pitching in this game, the Yankees had a chance to take advantage of his looming presence in Game 5, and manager Aaron Boone seemed prepared to do exactly that. Closer Luke Weaver seemed to be on track for a seven-out save before that big eighth inning made it unnecessary, and after Luis Gil got in trouble in the fifth, Boone went to high-leverage Tim Hill and Clay Holmes to get through that inning.
This was another ineffective evening for the Yankees’ captain Aaron Judge, another night when they struggled to get help from the bottom half of their lineup (when they had two aboard and two out with Anthony Banda on the mound for L.A. in the seventh, Gleyber Torres was called out looking for strike three), another night when their starter didn’t have it. Though Verdugo’s two-out, two-run homer in the ninth put a late jolt into the building, it was too late to spark a real rally.

He really cares about this group. He cares about the organization. He cares about winning, and that’s what drives us all.”
Yankees: Jose Trevino got the start in Game 3 over Austin Wells, who has gone 4-for-41 this postseason and 1-for-8 over the first two World Series games. Rizzo and Volpe flipped spots in the order from Games 1 and 2.
